AfroPop: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange
AfroPop’s stories are beautifully and poignantly told, and remind us that, despite the hardships people of African descent face globally, our spirit of ingenuity burns bright. Black Public Media is committed to continuing to bring these stories, and others that celebrate the art, culture and creativity people of African descent, to the American public.

Season 13
The 13th season of AfroPop: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange kicks off on the WORLD Channel, Mon., April 5. This year's anthology features shorts and feature-length films about individuals who challenge systems of oppression and inequality, and those who create new avenues of expression through the arts. The series opens with Mama Gloria, a Luchina Fisher documentary chronicling the uninhibited personality of trans woman Gloria Allen. In episode two, Finding Sally traces filmmaker Tamara Dawit's investigation into the mysterious disappearance of her freedom-fighting aunt in Ethiopia during the 1970s.
Episode three feature's Dr. Yaba Blay's Professional Black Girl, a celebration of Black culture and womanhood in New Orleans. Episode four showcases three shorts: Betye Saar: Taking Care of Business, by Christine Turner; Elena, by Michèle Stephenson; and Man of the People, by Amir George
The season wraps with Bakosó, a celebration of Cuba's ever-evolving Afrobeat music and dance scene, directed by Eli Jacobs-Fantauzzi.
In addition to streaming on WORLD, starting April 5, AfroPoP Season 13 will be carried by public television stations starting in May 2021. Check local PBS listings for details.
